NIS and Social Pension Beneficiaries: Beware of Text Message Scams

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security advises all NIS and Social Pension beneficiaries to be aware of scams circulating via text messages (SMS), advising recipients that their pension benefits have been suspended, and requesting updating of banking information.

Pensioners are being alerted that these message are part of a scam and are not from the Ministry. Pensioners are being cautioned against sharing banking information or any other personal details via text message, internet links, or other means and to report such requests to the police immediately.

Pensioners who have concerns about their pension benefits are invited to contact the Ministry of Labour and Social Security directly by calling the Customer Contact Centre at 876-922-8000-13 or by visiting the Ministry’s office in their parish.

The Ministry encourages all its clients to stay vigilant and protect their personal information from scammers.

Online Payment of Factory Registration Fee

The Factories Act requires that every factory must be registered under the Act and maintain a valid certificate of registration throughout its operational life. The certificate of registration is valid for a period of three (3) years and requires renewal upon its expiration.

Factory owners and operators are encouraged to pay their factory registration or re-registration fees through the online payment option now available on the Tax Administration of Jamaica’s website at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm .

This option facilitates quick and efficient payment without the hassle of joining lines. You are required to email a copy of the payment receipt along with the completed factory registration application form to oshd@mlss.gov.jm after payment to expedite processing.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security is advising its valued customers that the Customer Service Department at 14 National Heroes Circle, Kingston 4 will be temporarily relocated to 18 Ripon Road, Kingston 5 effective Monday, February 8, 2021.

NIS Pensioners Now Receiving Payment After Delay Processing on Friday

NIS Pensioners who did not receive their payments on Friday, August 14 as was scheduled, because of technical issues experienced by the National Commercial bank, are now receiving payments. The bank has confirmed to the Ministry that the issue has now been resolved and the processing of payments started early on Saturday.

Pensioners are therefore being urged to check their accounts to verify that their payments are now being reflected.

The National Commercial Bank has indicated that NIS Pensioners who bank with other Financial Institutions will see payment start reflecting in their accounts on Monday, August 17, 2020.

Employers are reminded that in keeping with the Employment Termination and Redundancy Payment Regulations, the Minister with responsibility for Labour should be advised of any redundancy exercise. This notice should be submitted in writing to the Minister within 21 days of the date the redundancy takes effect. Persons who contravene this regulation can be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding $250,000, up to 3 months imprisonment or both a fine and imprisonment.
